Once you figure out how to sculpt shadows and highlights by just painting them directly you should be good to play with additional blending modes. Establishing the main color, shadow color, and highlight color in that order each with flat colors at 100% opacity makes the coloring process a lot quicker and easier. If you are shading a curved surface, you might want to use a soft brush. Soft brushes and hard brushes will give you a different quality of edge transitions. You can make this much more complex by adding more layers but I recommend keeping it simple at first and experimenting with additional highlight/shadow layers or blending modes later. This is just one of many methods for coloring stylized art. You may need to adjust the layer opacity to balance the intensity of the highlights. Blending modes require more precise color values/saturation for best results. You may choose to set this layer’s blending mode to overlay/soft light/color dodge for more intense highlights. Use this 2nd clipped layer to paint your highlights. Make a new layer above the shadow layer and clip it in the same way. You may need to adjust the layer opacity to balance the intensity of the shadows. You may choose to set this layer’s blending mode to multiply. Use this clipped layer to paint the shadows. Make a new layer above and clip it to the flat color layer. Check the Lock transparent pixels box on the layer so that you don’t paint outside the shape. On a new layer, fill the shape under your line art with a flat color.
